A 36-hour hackathon on the theme of a robot fashion show, run by the ATR Lab, Kent State Design Innovation and the Fashion School’s KnitLAB (Oct 16–18, 2026). 45 students from six universities, including Carnegie Mellon, worked hands-on with humanoid robots and designed wearables, products or business ideas for them.
Our team won Best Humanoid Wearable/Accessory and $1,000, the second-largest cash prize of the event.
Our theme was Bloom: past and future, inspired by nature. We dressed the Booster K1 in:
- A coat inspired by 18th and 19th century clothes, cut full so that it moves with the robot, and made to fit its body.
- A blooming flower on its head: servo motors open and close the petals, controlled wirelessly by an ESP32.
- A belt with golden vines and 3D-printed details.
- 3D-printed shoes: a light open-work pair with vines, and solid Dutch clogs.
The hardest part was adapting the outfit to the robot’s rigid way of moving.
My part was the CAD and the 3D printing. I designed 12 types of shoes for the K1 and we printed two of them for the show. Both are now open source, with print files and a MuJoCo model of the K1 wearing the clogs.
